Colour Genetics Index
Use this page to familiarize yourself with, or refresh your mind on, the terms commonly used in genetics discussions.
- Includes definitions & explanations of terms used univerally as well as throughout this site.
This page follows on from The Base Colours to define the basic factors that modify the three Base Colours to give the various shades, highlights, tones and other features to a colour - The second main interaction in defining the genotype for an individuals colour happens here. While rarely included in the written genotype for an individuals' colour, they are just as important as the Base Colour interactions, as this is where the depth and tone of the Base Colour is determined.
- Includes
the factors shade, sooty, mealy/panagare, dapples, bend-or spots and mane & tail colour on chestnuts.
- Includes reference tables with the Base Colour/s + Modifying Factor/s and the subsequent name changes that result.
Every horse colour begins with one of three Base Colours - Chestnut, Bay or Black. This page discusses the interaction of the two genes and their loci that control the Base Colours - The Extension Gene/Locus and the Agouti Gene/Locus.
The interaction of the Extension and Agouti Genes is the hardest to comprehend of all the equine colour genes, but a thorough understanding of the processes that occur here required as they are the basis for all equine colour genetics.
- Includes explanations and colour descriptions for Dominant Black Extension and Wild Type Agouti.

Sabino Overo manifests in the widest range of markings of all white pattern genes, from the smallest area of white on the head and leg to full body coverage with no visible dark hairs, and is the hardest to predict in regards to inheritance.
Sabino Overo is the only white pattern gene that has been proven to be present in the world's oldest breed, the Purebred Arabian, to date, and is the main focus of the Chetar Arabians Breeding Program.

Also known as the 'White Ticking' Pattern, and/or 'Arab Roan', Rabicano is a partial roaning pattern often confused with the True Roan Pattern, & sometimes also with the Sabino Overo pattern gene. Rabicano manifests in a uniquely marked pattern of white ticking. Rabicano is present in many breeds, and is quite prollific in the Purebred Arabian & its' Derivatives Breeds.

This page introduces the genetics behind the different patterns of White and how they physically develop. Also includes some useful, basic tips on how to distinguish between the different white roaning and spotting pattern genes.
This page explains the method in which an individuals' genotype for colour is written in genetic shorthand.
- Includes
reference tables with the symbols and gene abbreviations used in genetic shorthand.
All Colours Begin With the Basic Colour Processes
Regardless of the end colour that we see, the process of reaching that colour always begins at the same point with the same initial Building Block.
This section deals with this initial process of building what is widely termed the "The Base Colour" of a horse, and details the way in which the wide variety of shades falling within these catergories are achieved and the genetic processes behind them.
Grey is the result of a gradual loss of pigmentation in the hair shaft, or an ongoing loss of colour, and is one of the more prolific and popular of all horse colours - It is also one of the easiest to understand on a genetic level.
