Wayward Angel

For a long time I have admired this mare from afar. I enquired about her possibly being for sale long before the opportunity to purchase her arose. I was ecstatic when I was given the chance to have the lovely Angel join my ever expanding horsey family, and did not hesitate at all in saying yes!
Angel carries all of the traits I look for in Part Bred Arabians. A gorgeous profile with huge wideset eyes, a lovely long and shapely, well set neck with clean throat, short back and loin with length through the croup, clean legs with short cannons and huge elevated movement, all presented with stunning colour combination and a beautiful temperament.

Angel is a very special lady, not only in temperament and conformation, but also in colour! She is Black based [homozygous recessive at the Agouti locus], and possibly also carries two dominant alleles at the Extension locus [and if this is so she will never produce Chestnut based progeny regardless of the colour of the other parent]. In addition, Angel also carries two white pattern genes - Tobiano and Sabino Overo. Contrary to popular belief, horses carrying only the Tobiano white pattern gene

alone are alot rarer that people believe them to be - A true Tobiano [and only Tobiano] carrier will have a completely solid/base coloured head from the poll to throatlatch and forward, regardless of the degree ofexpression. A horse with a Tobiano body marking that in addition has any kind of white facial marking almost always has inherited an additional white pattern gene from its' parents. In most cases it will likely be the Sabino Overo gene, and in most cases the Sabino Overo gene will be in its' most minimal of expressions. However, there are Tobiano + Sabino Overos' out there that carry moderate to maximal expressions of the Sabino Overo gene in addition to the Tobiano, they are just a little harder to identify if you're not sure what to look for! {If you'd like to learn more about identifying combination white pattern genes then you should most definitely revisit this website in a bit as I am right now working on an equine colour genetics reference site!] Angel is one of these 'sometimes hard to spot' Tobiano + Sabino Overos - Note the white facial markings covering nostril, lips and chin area, and white travelling across the throatlatch - this marking extends under the jawline, almost meeting the facial marking/s, and in addition, Angel has the additional Sabino Overo indicator of what's sometimes referred to as 'bleeding' throughout her entire coat - A true Tobiano has very crisp, clean edges to their very circular appearing body markings, while a Tobiano + Sabino Overo has an interplay of solid/base coloured and white hairs at the marking edges, giving a more softened, feathered edge to the white pattern markings - The white pattern/hairs "bleed" into the solid base coloured hairs. And finally, while hard to see in the photos, Angel also has minimal white ticking through her solid flank shield markings, which is yet another characteristic of the Sabino Overo gene - All of which makes Angel a fantastic colour asset!
