Docs Lil Puzzle, aka Penny, was the very first mare to join me under the Chetar Arabians stud name. For many reasons, Penny is extremely special to me. I spent hours on end with this beautiful lady earning her trust when she first came to me. She has been mistreated in the past and it left her very apprehensive towards people. We bonded early on, and then in the following years that bond was strengthened further when Penny lost two foals in row under freak circumstances and we became eachothers rock through the grief. Penny has my undying devotion, and I like to think I have hers. She will never leave me, for any reason. Luckily, she is worth her weight in gold as a broodmare and her contribution to Chetar is invaluable.
Penny is the most colourful of the Chetar Arabians mares. She carries
three white pattern colour genes - Sabino Overo, Frame Overo and
Tobiano. Penny was advertised as carrying such when I purchased
her, though there was some doubt in my mind as to whether she did
indeed carry the three pattern genes even though her coat patterning does indicate she carries them. All three genes have been definately proven without a doubt now with the arrival of this seasons foal. Penny has now produced three foals since coming to me and between them they have inherited varying combinations of Sabino Overo, Frame Overo and Tobiano from Penny (all were sired by solid coloured stallions with very minimal white markings).
The darker coloured, pigmented areas that Penny does have can be attributed mostly to the Tobiano gene, though they are relatively small and/or very irregular compared to most Tobianos due to having been affected by the other colour genes that she carries. Her 'Tobiano' attributed markings are the flank and chest shields. Her near side flank shield is very small, about a 2.5 inch wide by 6 inch long vertical 'stripe' while her off side flank marking is larger, covering almost the entire flank, and much more obvious as a Tobiano trait. Both flank shields have intense Sabino Overo ticking, highly laced edging, partially disconnected and completely interrupted patches, all of which are definitive Sabino Overo traits. Penny's chest shield isn't as intensely ticked through as her flank markings, though is still very obviously interspersed with white. The chest shield, normally one large patch covering the entire chest down to and between the forelegs (at the least) and travelling up the underside of the neck on regular Tobianos, is comparatively small and highly disrupted due the Sabino Overo gene. The edges are laced and jagged and the shield is split into six patches distinctly disconnected from eachother. Penny's tail colour held to be a trait of Tobiano as well, with the lower portion retaining some pigmented hair and the upper being white.

inducted into the American or Australian PHAA and AQHA Hall of Fames for their performance and breeding success.
Penny's sire line traces to the legendary second inductee to the Australian Paint Horse Hall of Fame, C-Notes Playboy, her paternal great grandsire. Playboy was imported when the PHAA was only one year old. He had already won National Champion titles prior to his import, and went on to win the likes of Grand Champion at the 1978 SPHC Victorian State Championships and Senior Champion at the SEQPHC Queensland State Championships in later years - Both highlights being major awards in the early days of the PHAA. Over just a two year period he earned his ROM Halter and ROM Western Pleasure!
Penny's maternal great grandsire is the immortal Peppy San, American National Cutting Horse World Champion, NCHA World Champion Sire, World Champion Halter, AQHA High Point Performance, ROM Performance, AQHA and NCHA Hall of Fame Inductee to name but a few accolades. His and his sons, Peppy Palleo's daughters are to this day much sought after broodmare lines both here and overseas, with many Quarter Horse Breeding programs being based on their lines alone.
Those are just two examples of the names that any horse lover will recognize, regardless of how much they know about Paints and QH's. Add to the list Vaquero, one of the four original imports to Australia, Doc Bar and his son Doc T Bar, Beggarman, Dell Mingo, Beggar Bingo, Driftwood Bingo and some of the most widely reknowned lines from one of Americas most successful Quarter Horse Studs King Ranch.
Penny's Breeding
Penny's Frame Overo characteristics are her head markings. Penny displays the head markings commonly referred to as a Medicine Hat in some parts of the world - The darker coloured areas are on her ears and around her upper eyes. Penny has two partially ice blue eyes as well, another Frame Overo attributed trait. The edges of both eye patches run through the centre of eyes, causing the eye pigmentation to 'split' down the centre. All of Penny's facial markings have minimal Sabino Overo ticking, and her ear markings have been partially disrupted by the gene as well. Penny also has a pigmented (darker) upper lip and nostril, commonly referred to as a moustache when centred, which are Frame Overo traits as well.
Penny has an additional couple of patches on her underside and two on her body that could be the result of any of her colour genes, though I am more inclined to lean towards Sabino Overo being the cause due to their size and appearance.
Even people who are not familiar with Quarter Horse and Paint breeding recognize the names that appear in Penny's pedigree. 75% of Penny's lines trace back to foundation bred Australian and/or American stock.

Penny's Progeny
Penny has produced one foal to date for Chetar Arabians, with her second offspring expected to arrive in late 2010. She is one of the mares that I will never ever give up, whether circumstances allow me to continue my breeding program or not - Penny is one of my forever mares! Her value as a broodmare alone is undeniable. Not only does she carry a colour combination that has to date produced 100% coloured progeny from four foals sired by solid coloured stallions, but Penny also consistently produces amazing, typey, people loving Quarabs!
CHETAR AL SHAHKIR - 2008/09 Season Colt
Shahkir arrived on early Boxing Day morning 2008, and I couldn't have been happier with him! I had previously gone through the grief of losing two foals in a row for very different and insurmountable reasons with Penny, nursing her back to health and 'trying again', so Shahkir was to be a very special foal regardless of his sex or colour in the first place! When the awesome colour presented itself, and then was followed by the near on perfect conformation, undeniable Arabian type and in your pocket temperament, I had no hesitation in deciding to retain Shahkir as a future sire of Chetar Arabians.
2010/11 BREEDING SEASON
Penny has been confirmed in foal to Chetar Arabians Purebred Sabino Overo Rabicano Stallion AZZAAM for a late October 2010 foal. This will be the second born Quarab for Chetar Arabians, and I am sincerely hoping we will be blessed with a filly from Penny this time around!
